Falcons Defeat Terrors
Strong first quarter leads to victory
The Coudersport Falcons started strong Friday night at Duke Center against the Otto Eldred Terrors. They put up 21 points in the first quarter and another 7 in the second quarter to take a 28-0 half time lead. It looked like the Falcons were going to cruise to another lopsided victory in week two but a stingy Otto Eldred team would make the Falcons earn everything they gained in the second half.
Big plays were the story for the Falcons. They took the opening drive from their own 23 yard line and drove it 87 yards for their first score of the night. Strong running by Kyle Gee, Tim Thomas, Zach Buckler and Adam Foust moved the ball down to the Terror 34 yard line. From there Boomer Wetzel completed his first of 7 passes on the night hooking up with Senior tight end Colton Corey for a 30 yard catch and run that set the Falcons up with a first and goal from the 4 yard line. A three yard run by Thomas up the gut set up a second and goal at the one and Gee took it in from there. Cooper Bonczar then added his first of 4 PAT's on the night to make the score 7-0.
An interception by safety Justen Kinder on Otto's first offensive series set the Falcons up with a first and goal from the Otto 3 yard line. From there it took Thomas just one play to slash into the end zone off the left side. Bonczar's kick made it 14-0 half way through the first quarter.
Dirk Cowburn made his second interception of the season and set the Falcons up in good field position starting on the Terror 31 yard line. From there the Falcons ran the ball to the 20 yard line. Wetzel then hooked up with Corey again for the first of two TD passes on the night. After the PAT by Bonczar, the Falcons had a 21-0 lead heading into the second quarter of play.
The Falcons would again find the end zone late in the first quarter with a one yard run by Derek Burdick through the middle of the line. That play capped off a 4 play, 62 yard drive that included 2 big runs of 28 yards and 26 yards by Cowburn and Adam Foust respectively. Bonczar's kick completed the scoring in the first half.
The second half proved quite different for the Falcons. The Otto Terrors came out fighting in the second half and dominated the line of scrimmage. The Falcon runningbacks had a hard time finding any daylight to run through and Wetzel had little time to throw the ball.
The lone score came on a simple out pass from Wetzel to Corey. While Corey was looking to just get a first down, he was able to take the 10 yard pass another 59 yards for his second touchdown of the game. Then an errant snap on the extra point try forced Corey to start to his left, then change direction and raced around the right side of the line to cap off a big night for the Senior tight end. He ended the game with 3 catches for 119 yards and 2 Touchdowns, plus the 2 point conversion run.
The Falcons will next host a tough Cameron County (2-0) team at CARP field. The Red Raiders come off a 62-0 drubbing of the once dominate Smethport Hubbers and are ready to avenge last years 2 point loss to the Falcons in Red Raider territory. This game could go a long way in determining who wins the AML North this season. Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
