Finally get running game going again.
The Falcons struck early and often Friday night at CARP Field. With 28 points scored in the first quarter, the only drama left of the night was who would be crowned 2007 Homecoming Queen.
On the opening drive of the game the falcons marched 66 yards on 8 plays that ended with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Boomer Wetzel to Justen Kinder. As it turned out that was the last pass the senior quarterback would throw on the night as the Falcons ground out 303 yards in the running game.
The Falcons would add 3 more touchdowns in the first quarter on runs by Colton Corey (10 yards), Kyle Gee (12 yards) and Dirk Cowburn (31 yards).
Starting the second quarter Coach Simcoe began substituting frequently. Sophomore running back Nick Reddick ended up leading the team with rushing in rushing as he racked up 89 yards on 16 carries.
The other star of the night may have been Freshman kicker, Cooper Bonczar as he booted field goals of 20 and 30 yards during the second quarter to make the score 34 – 0 at half time. Along with the field goals Bonczar went 4 for 5 on extra points, the lone miss coming on a block by a Sheffield player who burst through the middle of the line.
Once the Homecoming festivities were completed and Melissa Gerner was announced Homecoming Queen, there was one more little ceremony to go.
As Coach Simcoe got the team ready to take the field to start the second half, a “human tunnel” of the current players and alumni who played for Coach over the past 28 years lined up on the field wearing purple and white jerseys. Coach walked down the tunnel attempting to shake hands with all the 70 plus players that had gathered to congratulate him on his 200th win last week.
As he exited the tunnel Coach Simcoe was greeted by his wife Pam. He was then awarded last week’s game ball by this year’s senior players. Coach’s Tom Russell and Dan Kightlinger awarded him a commemorative ball signed by many of the Coaches who have assisted Coach Simcoe over the years. The cheerleaders handed Coach an assortment of cookies and other goodies. Then Mrs. Huck awarded him with a commemorative plaque from the faculty and Administration.
The second half featured the Falcon JV team in action. The lone second half score came on a 1 yard run by Sophomore running back Dakota Dehn off the right side of the line. That ended the scoring for the Falcons on the night as the PAT was blocked.
Next week the Falcons will travel to Johnsonburg to play the Rams. They then return home to face Smethport in what will be the last regular season home game.
