Under the new lights, in front of hundreds of fans sitting in the new bleachers, listening to John Sherry on the new PA System, the 2008 Falcons opened up their season with a 29-16 win over visiting Elk County Catholic.
With the offensive line opening up some tremendous holes in the ECC defensive front, the Coudersport backs enjoyed a successful night running the football for 251 yards on just 29 attempts with 4 touchdowns. Junior Dirk Cowburn led the way with 127 yards on just 7 carries and touchdown runs of 75 and 23 yards. Senior running back Tim Thomas toted the ball 14 times for 53 yards including an 18 yard TD but had a 40 yard run called back on a holding penalty in the first quarter. Brett Whitman added a 66 yard touchdown run.
Defensively for the Falcons, the Linebacking corp of Zach Buckler, Chris Symans and Dirk Cowburn led a vicious attact that held the Crusaders to just 78 yards rushing and 59 passing, much of which came after the Falcons started subbing down to their second team defense. Elk County didn't score a touch down until they blocked a punt with 10:05 left in the fourth quarter.
The Falcons will travel to Brockway Friday night for another crossover game. The Rovers got a stadium upgrade this year themselves having the new style artificial turf put down. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
